Culturally Respectful Care for Older Adults

Personalized home care includes respect for each person’s language, family traditions, culture, religious practices and preferences. Asking open-ended questions about meals, routines, privacy and communication can help build trust. Whenever possible, care plans should be explained in the person’s preferred language, with qualified interpretation for important medical conversations. Caregivers should avoid assumptions based on someone’s background and work alongside families while honoring the older adult’s own decisions and dignity.

Care at home

Every person’s care needs are different. Families can work with healthcare professionals to create a plan that supports comfort, dignity, independence and safety. Home health aides and certified nursing assistants provide assistance within their training and authorized scope; medical assessment and treatment should be directed by licensed clinicians.

What families can do

Maintain clear communication with the care team, note meaningful changes in symptoms or daily abilities, and seek guidance when a new concern arises. Personalized support and a safe, respectful home environment can make daily care easier to navigate.
